Not by Might, Nor by Power

Over the years, I have noticed that some of the best things that have ever happened to me, and for me, have rarely happened because of my ideas, strategies, or hard work.

I have racked my brain over certain things in my life that yielded no results. I have burnt the midnight oil and worked long hours pursuing opportunities that I never got the chance to grasp. Yet somehow, when I let go and trust God, He makes things available to me.

I find myself receiving what I did not have to toil for, experiencing what I did not have to bend my back for, and accomplishing what I could never have imagined possible on my own.

When I first started my journey as a mother, I would watch my little toddlers do things that were incredibly risky. There were moments when they could have been seriously hurt, and I was too far away to help them. Yet somehow, they would escape injury by an inch.

Those moments made me realise just how limited my power as a parent really is. As much as I wanted to, I could not protect my children from everything at all times.

Watching my toddlers walk away unscathed from situations that could have ended very differently showed me the power of God in a way I could not ignore.

Even though I have witnessed this power at work in my life, I still seem to default to my own limited strength. Only when I have exhausted myself, when I am worn out by the failure of my own solutions, do I finally seek God and ask Him to take over.

“This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.”

Zechariah 4:6

No amount of skill, intelligence, influence, or effort can guarantee a life of prosperity, peace, joy, or fruitfulness.

Our power is limited, but we are children of a limitless God who has our backs at all times.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

John 14:16-17

We have the Holy Spirit, yet if I’m being honest, I feel that He is underutilised in my life at the moment.

I know that God’s power is available to me, and I know that He has placed His Spirit within me to guide, comfort, teach, strengthen, and help me. Yet so often, I find myself relying on my own understanding, striving in my own strength, and trying to figure everything out on my own before I fully surrender it to Him.

As I continue to submit my life to God and allow the Holy Spirit to lead me, I want to be intentional about reminding myself that my limitless God has already given me His Spirit. I do not have to navigate life’s challenges alone, nor do I have to carry the weight of every decision, uncertainty, or responsibility in my own strength.

This morning, as I was feeling overwhelmed by the many things I need to figure out and work through, I was reminded of a prayer I wrote in 2024. When I read it again recently, it spoke to me in a fresh way.

I immediately felt that if I made this prayer part of my daily walk with God, it would help me grow in my dependence on Him, deepen my trust in His timing, sharpen my discernment, and increase my wisdom. More than that, I believe it would help me experience the peace of God in every area of my life, even in seasons when I do not have all the answers.

So today, I would like to share that prayer with you. Perhaps, like me, you may be carrying questions, decisions, responsibilities, or burdens that feel bigger than your strength. My prayer is that these words will remind both of us that we were never meant to do life by our own might or power, but by the Spirit of God who lives within us.

Here is our Prayer:

God, I come before you to firstly thank you for the gift of life, to tell you how grateful I am that you have chosen me for the life I get to live, and for your presence in my life. God, Thank You.

I honour you with my life, with my heart, and with my soul. I commit all that I am to all the plans you have for my life and to the vision you had when you created me to enter this world.

Lord, you sacrificed your only Son, who left us with your Holy Spirit when He ascended into heaven, so that today we can feel your very presence and be led by you in everything we do. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit, Lord.

Today, I pray that your Holy Spirit leads every single thought, idea, decision, and action that I take. I pray that your Holy Spirit takes over all the activities I have lined up, every interaction, meeting, duty, project, piece of work, and all that I have to accomplish.

Lord, may I feel the presence of your Holy Spirit every single second of this day. When I feel discouraged, anxious, or sad, may your Holy Spirit lift me up. When I feel happiness, joy, and excitement, may your Holy Spirit share in this joy with me.

God, I don’t want to do anything without you. I do not want to move if You do not say I should move. I do not want to take action if you don’t say I should act. I do not want to proceed if You do not make a way for me. I want you in everything I do, Lord. Help me to be sensitive to your voice, to your promptings, to your nudges, and to your confirmations. Help me to hear you clearly, to see you clearly, and to feel your presence.

I trust you with all of my being. I love you with all that I am.

You have created me for a purpose and have loved me enough to trust me with Your precious assignment. God, may I never forget the trust You have in me. I pray that I walk with boldness because you see me as worthy and capable of fulfilling your purpose.

God, thank you for seeing me, for loving me, and for being on my side every single second of every day.

Help me to see how best I can serve you today and how I can serve Your Kingdom, God.

Holy Spirit, lead me. I am available, I am open, and I am ready.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray.

Amen.

May this prayer help both of us live lives that are aligned with God’s perfect will, trusting in the One who desires only what is best for His children. God’s power is more than enough. As we pray these words, may that truth take deeper root in our hearts each day.

With love and faith,
